Hi! My name is Alex Harris, and I’m a third-year journalism and sustainability major at the University of Florida. I started this blog as a school project, but I decided to keep it going because I genuinely enjoy the subject material.

Down to Earth is a blog designed to make sustainability simple and relevant. Most of the time, when someone says that word, everyone immediately loses interest. But I think it’s an important thing to talk about, and should therefore be explained in a way that everyone can understand.

There are dramatic changes going on in the world around us, and to survive them we need to change our behavior. The only way to accomplish this is through a cultural shift in our thinking, and this cultural shift starts with college students. We need to be the ones to ask ourselves: what can I do to be more sustainable? Here’s where I come in, I’d like to offer simple ways to make a difference every day. That’s all it takes, simple and conscious decisions.

  1. Alex, your mother told me about your blog – just wanted to say I think it’s terrific – well-written with a lot of good information. Your pieces on the grocery store and the farmers market makes me wish I lived in Gainesville!

    Keep up the good work!
